Take heart.
In many ways, the world still feels a bit upside down. Like many of us, I’ve come to realize that I can’t sit and wait for things to be back to “normal.” What I can do, however, is appreciate the things in front of me and trust more. This is a common theme on this blog, but I’ve found that counting even the smallest good things in your life can truly shift your outlook.
Sure, there are days where I don’t speak to another human in person. But there’s also slower rhythms and really pretty night skies that sound like the instrumental bridge of LANY’s “sad” + Sleeping at Last’s “Saturn.”
Picking gratitude and joy over negativity is a conscious choice that takes work, every day.
I started by going through some old photos and quickly realized how many images I’d taken of the sun and moon over the last few years, from so many different states. There’s something so constant and comforting about that, the rising and setting that take place consistently, regardless of what’s happening in the world.
Then I made this list of habits I’m working on as my attempt to etch more goodness into these quarantine days:
Saying thank you more
Eating good food
More books, less screens
Run around the block blasting the killers, even if it’s just for 5 minutes to see daylight
Slowing down enough to sit and watch a sunrise or a sunset every day.
When you need a mood boost, listen to “Fader” by the Temper Trap or Harry Styles’ cover of “Juice”
All in all, this is my way of reminding you that we’re in this together. Take heart, fam.
